24th Sparda-Bank Bridge Race

10,000 spectators cheered the runners on the Rhine

On Sunday the 19th of April 2016 the Düsseldorf Bridge Race 2016 started. Thousands of runners and spectators came to watch this sporting event at the Burgplatz.

Düsseldorf - The 24th annual Sparda-Bank Bridge Race in Düsseldorf once again set a new record as a record 4600 registered participants came to race. The head of the organizing comittee of the event organiser Polizei-Sport-Verein Düsseldorf (Police sport club Düsseldorf) George Schimmelpfennig said: "In the last couple of years we have edged closer to having more than 4000 participants in the race, now we have achieved it." "In the next year we will celebrate our 25th anniversary. Of course we will want to add to our achievements".

The company sports club from the name sponsor Sparda-Bank West, who have been represented as a sponsor for the 15th time at the bridge race and was once again represented with it's SpardaLiner at the Burgplatz, also provided 85 participants for the race. The company sports club even represented the largest company team at the 5km race.

Executive board member of the Sparda-Bank West Dominik Schlarmann, who was running himself said: "We once again had a great atmosphere on and around the route. It is a fantastic feeling to run with so many others across the bridges of Düsseldorf. The bridge race is for me one of the most beautiful races." Angelika Peters, regional leader of the Sparda-Bank in Düsseldorf also shone a positive light on the event: "The bridge race is one of the year's highlights. The whole event is a huge community and family festival and as a bonus is in the middle of the Altstadt."

 Over 10,000 spectators crowded the running track in very good weather conditions on both sides of the Rhine and cheered loudly and excitedly for the participants. In the main race over a length of 10km a trio a men from the ART Düsseldorf team made up the best three runners: Toni Rüdiger won with a time of 32:55 minutes in front of Christian Röttger (33:28) and Fabian Dichans (33:51). The best woman in the race was Katharina Aßbeck from Remscheid (TriForce-Vital Remscheid) who finished the race after 40:05 minutes followed by Annette Geiken (LAZ Puma Rhein Sieg/40:13) and Dioni Gorla (ART Düsseldorf/41:14).
